I am interested in using domestic handicrafts, such as knitting, in unexpected ways. Textiles usually have a functional role in our homes and I am exploring the transformational qualities of traditional construction techniques such as weaving, knitting, braiding and coiling to create ornate, decorative objects to adorn a living space.
Throughout history the chandelier has been a symbol of wealth and decorative extravagance. In using discarded furnishings such as sheets, cushion covers and tea towels to create new ornamental furnishings, I hope to highlight the qualities that recycled materials possess and also talk about the status of a handcrafted object.
