Description
An 8-week course exploring the making of simple hand-built ceramic forms suitable for primitive firing. Engage with the whole process of making hand-built ceramics from beginning to end, including the building and firing of a simple kiln.

Designed for beginners ready to learn the basics, and intermediates looking for a challenge to expand their skills and explore new possibilities and develop understanding of simple low temperature firing methods.

In this course, you'll be introduced to a variety of hand building: techniques, coiling, slab construction, and pinching. We will also focus on burnished surfaces, naturally adding surface sheen to clay in readiness for primitive firing.

In the final week, you'll be involved in the construction of a primitive kiln to fire your finished pieces. Venue TBA.

Classes take place in DOT’s ceramics studio in North Hobart, — a working space shared by artists and designers. You’ll be guided by Ceramic artist Andrea Barker and supported by a small cohort of like-minded makers.

What you’ll learn
– The fundamentals of hand-building: coiling, slab building, pinching.
– Approaches to designing sculptural forms.
– An introduction to surface development using the ancient art of burnishing pottery.

– Practical studio skills: handling clay, using tools, safety, kiln building and primitive firing.
– Exploring further possibilities in surface mark marking using organic materials such as seaweed, wire, straw to achieve unexpected results from the firing.

What to bring
– Apron/T-shirt and an old towel
– Warm clothes, dot. is a large studio space and can be cold of an evening
– Non synthetic clothing for firing day including covered shoes/boots
