Description
An 8-week hands-on ceramics course exploring hand-building and primitive firing from start to finish. Working with clay, you’ll learn foundational techniques including coiling, slab building, pinching, and burnishing, while developing your own forms and surface finishes.

Designed for beginners and intermediate makers, the course focuses on both process and experimentation — encouraging you to explore material, texture, and form. In the final session, you’ll take part in building a simple kiln and firing your work using primitive methods.

Led by ceramic artist Andrea Barker and held within DOT’s working studio, this is an opportunity to develop practical skills, deepen your understanding of clay, and be part of a small, focused group of makers.

What you’ll learn
– Hand-building techniques: coiling, slab building and pinching
– Designing simple sculptural forms
– Surface development through burnishing
– Practical studio skills: working with clay, tools, safety
– Kiln building and primitive firing methods
– Using organic materials (seaweed, straw, wire) to create unpredictable surface effects

What to bring
– Apron/T-shirt and an old towel
– Warm clothes, dot. is a large studio space and can be cold of an evening
– Non synthetic clothing for firing day including covered shoes/boots

Other things to know
– This course is for ages 18+
– Class sizes are capped to keep things focused and safe
– Please check all dates before booking as make-up classes aren’t available
