Form & Surface | 6-week Handbuilding Course | Wednesday night 17 Sep - 22 Oct
6-9pm
_
A 6-week foundation in building by hand - designed for beginners ready to learn the basics, and intermediates looking to expand their skills and explore new possibilities in form and surface.
In this course, you'll be introduced to the core methods of handbuilding: coiling, slab construction, and pinching. These form the starting point for developing your own functional and sculptural pieces, while gaining a feel for how clay responds to touch, time and attention.
We’ll also begin experimenting with surface, exploring texture, mark-making, slips and glaze application as ways to shape both form and finish. This isn’t a production-line class. It’s a space to slow down, get curious and build confidence in your own making rhythm.
In the final week, you'll glaze your finished pieces using DOT’s in-house glaze library. Your work will be fired after the course and ready for collection 4-weeks later.
Classes take place in DOT’s ceramics studio in North Hobart, — a working space shared by artists and designers. You’ll be guided by ceramist Kate Bowman and supported by a small cohort of like-minded makers.
You’ll learn:
– The fundamentals of handbuilding: coiling, slab building and pinching
– Approaches to designing functional and sculptural forms
– An introduction to surface development using texture, slips and glazes
